Thirty-one Days Old - A new trick

Playing with Miley
The puppies learned a new trick today. For the past week or so I have been letting the puppies run free in the garage while I am feeding them or cleaning up after them. They have also been given time to just have some free play in the garage and seem to enjoy exploring the larger area. I usually leave the door open that connects the house to the garage so I am able to hear the puppies and keep an eye on them.

This morning I let the puppies out in the garage while Maddie and I went outside and got the newspaper. When we came back in they were playing with some of the toys so I went into the kitchen to get their morning milk prepared. To my surprise when I went back to the garage two minutes later there were four puppies in the house and the rest were sitting on the steps crying as they tried to figure out what the others had done.

I put all the puppies back on the garage floor and immediately they returned to the steps and tried once again to climb up into the house. So for several minutes I laughed as they climbed up and down the steps, so proud of what they had learned to do.

Four Weeks Old

Four Weeks Old
The puppies are four weeks old today. They are becoming more active and playful and have started to enjoy playing with things. They love to run around the garage but given the chance will quickly climb up on my lap if I sit on the floor. They have also started chewing on shoe laces and today two of them ran off with a small rug that was near a door. I am still giving them warm milk in a dish twice a day but they are eating more dry food and drinking water throughout the day. The puppies also received their second dose of wormer today, which most of them thought tasted pretty good.

We went outside for a bit today. The puppies were a bit confused by the snow, some of them just hated it while others were a bit more adventurous and some even ate it.

Maurie, Miley and a Santa

Miley and Maurie - sharing Miley's pillow
This week we started decorating for Christmas. It has been a long time since small children lived in the house and glass and breakable things needed to be put on high shelves. However, with the girls running around there were a few items that couldn't be put in their usual spots but have found new homes on higher ground.
Maurie
The girls really didn't seem to notice most of the decorations, however there was one Santa that just didn't look like it belonged in the house. I should have started the video sooner, we laughed at them running in circles and investigating and barking at the Santa for several minutes before I got the camera but they are still just not sure about it.

27 Days Old - Playing Outside

This afternoon was really sunny and almost warm so I decided to take the puppies outside and let them play in the yard. They seemed to really like running around in the grass with Maddie and Maurie and Miley.

Maurie is starting to enjoy playing with her siblings.

Miley still loves the puppies!

Playing is hard work!
The puppies have started chewing,
on shoes, pant legs and each other

Amber and Shadow

Thank you Tobey family for your update on Amber and Shadow.

We are so glad to know that they are doing so well for you! It's great to know they are eating, growing and training well and full of love.
Amber
Shadow
Amber and Shadow are eight-month-old siblings (Amber is a female and Shadow a male) from Maddie's first litter, which also makes them Miley and Maurie's litter-mates.

25 Days Old

Maurie, Maddie & Miley with the puppies
Today the puppies were in the kitchen for most of the morning. They explored and wandered around the room as we sat and played with them. After about twenty minutes they decided that playing was just too much work and they all feel soundly asleep. They slept for about an hour before they decided it was time to get up and play again.

Here are a bunch of pictures and videos from their morning adventures.

Twenty-three days old

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

We have so much to be thankful for this year.

Our puppies continue to grow and develop, and they just seem to get cuter each day! After I had weighed them this morning I decided to go back and compare their weights to that of Maddie's last litter. They are just such BIG puppies and I wanted to see how they compared to the previous litter to see if I was just forgetting how big the puppies were at three weeks. However after looking at my notes indeed these puppies are HUGE!

My smallest puppy is about 3 pounds, which is the same size as the smallest puppy in the last litter. There is one puppy who is about four pounds which was the size of the rest of the puppies in Miley and Maurie's litter. Four of the puppies have passed the five pound mark and one of the males has now passed SIX pounds! I am not sure why they are soo much bigger at this point in their development than my last litter but they are healthy and happy!

The puppies are becoming more playful and fun too and are starting to figure out how to escape from their room in the garage and love to explore.

Female - spot on head - 4 lbs 1 1/4 oz
Female - spot on shoulder - 5 lbs 3 3/4 oz
Female - spot on back - 5 lbs 1/4 oz
Female - spot on rump - 5 lbs
Female - spot on tail - 2 lbs 14 oz
The kitchen scale I have been using tops out at about five and a half pounds so the biggest puppy had to be weighed on my meat scale. He wasn't really sure about sitting on a different scale but boy he is cute!
Male - spot on head - 6 lbs
Male - spot on shoulder - 4 lbs 11 3/4 oz
Male - spot on back - 5 lbs 1 1/4 oz

Three Weeks Old

Twenty-one Days Old
The puppies are three weeks old today and they are growing and changing daily. In the last few days they have become much more playful and I have even caught a few of them wrestling. They are becoming more steady as they walk and some of them have learned how to leave their box and explore the garage.

Today we took more picture of the puppies in the wheel barrow. The puppies are still young enough that they are willing to just sit while I snap a few pictures, but I fully expect that next week these pictures will be a bit more of a challenge as they will be even more mobile and want to explore their environment.
I also took individual pictures of the puppies this afternoon. A special thanks to Kirstin for helping!

I also took a video of the puppies in my kitchen. It was the first time that they had been free to walk on the floor and several of them did not like that the floor was more slippery that what they are accustomed to walking on.
